SloClap, the developer behind Rematch, has released a statement addressing the absence of crossplay functionality, apologizing to fans and acknowledging they should have communicated this limitation sooner.
Rematch, a 5v5 arcade-style soccer game played from a third-person perspective, comes from the creators of Sifu and Absolver. The recent beta attracted 1.9 million participants across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. However, disappointment arose when SloClap confirmed crossplay wouldn't be available at launch, announcing this mere hours before early access began.
In a blog post released alongside today's official launch (June 19), SloClap provided insight into what went wrong.
"We recognize many players hoped for cross-platform play from launch day," the studio stated.
"While we pushed hard to deliver crossplay for release, Rematch represents our first attempt at implementing this technology. Unexpected technical challenges ultimately prevented timely implementation. We should have communicated this setback earlier, and we sincerely regret any frustration caused.
"Ensuring players can enjoy Rematch with friends remains our top priority alongside bug fixes. We're fully committed to rolling out crossplay quickly and will announce a definitive timeline soon. Technical groundwork exists, but significant work remains—developing interfaces, debugging, polishing, and passing certification processes require time. Rest assured we're working to accelerate progress."
The post also addressed early access performance issues now receiving priority attention, including lag, stuttering, frame rate drops, and server-client synchronization problems affecting match quality.
"For example, we're aware of bugs causing inconsistent ball interactions and erratic movement patterns," SloClap noted, confirming investigation efforts. Additionally, the team focuses on eliminating critical bugs causing crashes, post-goal freezing, and menu lockouts.
Beyond fixes, SloClap teased forthcoming updates featuring "exciting new content and features" across four key areas: core gameplay refinements, competitive systems (tournaments, Elite-ranked leaderboards, club creation), social enhancements (crossplay, spectator modes, teammate rematching), and casual play options including AI training partners.
The studio concluded by reminding players of their smaller team size: "While committed to delivering these features, implementation requires time—please understand we can't accomplish everything immediately."
Despite launch hurdles, Rematch enjoys positive reception on Steam with 'Mostly Positive' reviews. Current concurrent players exceed 35,000 on Valve's platform, with numbers expected to climb during its debut weekend.
