Ryan Gosling's upcoming sci-fi thriller Project Hail Mary isn't set for release until 2026, yet it's already off to a phenomenal start, having shattered a remarkable record long before its theatrical debut.
The film's director, Phil Lord, announced this week that its trailer has soared past an astounding 400 million views. This achievement makes it the most-watched trailer in a single week for any original film that is neither a sequel nor a remake.
Lord took to social media to celebrate the milestone. "Holy Moly! A massive thank you to all you wonderful, generous fans of movies, books, near-light-speed space travel, and the Sun for propelling the Project Hail Mary trailer past 400 million views—the biggest one-week debut ever for an original, non-sequel, non-remake film trailer," he exclaimed in a post that featured celebratory artwork, including a new image of Gosling from the film.
Holy Moly! Thank you all you glorious generous fans of movies / books / near light speed space travel / the Sun for pushing the trailer for Project Hail Mary past 400 million views – the most in one week for a non-sequel non-remake original film trailer… ever. Lord continued, "Can't wait to thank some of you in person at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H alongside our friends Ryan, Andy, and Drew… with a few other surprises in store…" He will be joined at the major event by Gosling, co-director Chris Miller, original novelist Andy Weir, and screenwriter Drew Goddard. As for the exciting reveals they have planned for fans, details will have to wait until SDCC.
This marks the second film adaptation of Andy Weir's work, following 20th Century Fox's highly successful *The Martian*, starring Matt Damon. That film was a major box office hit, earning approximately $630 million globally. It's no surprise, then, that Amazon MGM Studios is eager to adapt another of Weir's novels, and that this project is already generating immense buzz.
Project Hail Mary also stars Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. It is scheduled to hit theaters on March 20, 2026.
