Hunger: Extraction RPG with Multiplayer Mode

by Joshua Dec 16,2025

The extraction shooter market has become oversaturated, requiring truly innovative offerings to stand out. This prompted my interest in meeting with Good Fun Corporation developers to preview Hunger, their upcoming UE5-powered zombie action-RPG featuring an extraction gameplay loop.

Significantly, the developers emphasized Hunger shouldn't be pigeonholed as just another extraction shooter. After reviewing their impressive early build (though too early for a confirmed Early Access date), it's clear Hunger could elevate beyond Steam's crowded shooter landscape.

Two aspects immediately stood out: Hunger's unique "Renaissance gothic" aesthetic blending early firearms with melee weapons, and its technical execution showcasing UE5's graphical capabilities through exceptional lighting, texture detail, and environmental design.

While hands-on gameplay wasn't available, the developers described a hybrid between ARC Raiders' accessibility and Escape From Tarkov's depth. Players begin in the Outer Ramparts hub – a non-combat zone where they can interact with quirky NPCs like Piro, a masked merchant reminiscent of 1920s cigarette girls.

The Early Access launch will feature three 1km² maps (Jacques Bridge, Sombre Forest, Sarlat Farm), each with underground dungeons and six weather variants. After 50-60 hours, players unlock the Cauldron area to select from six professions (three gathering, three crafting).

Lore unfolds through collectible Missives and Maps, with complete extraction rewarding XP and narrative progression. NPC dialogue further enriches the backstory of "The End" bacterial outbreak.

Combat offers 33 weapons with unique mechanics – melee preserves stealth while firearms attract more zombies. Enemy variants like the gas-emitting Bloater and blee-causing Shamblers create tactical challenges.

Progression features a Mastery Tree with four specializations (Physiology, Survival, Martial, Cunning), and both solo/co-op options are viable. The developers confirmed no battle passes or pay-to-win elements, though cosmetic MTX will support development.

Expeditions last approximately 30-35 minutes, designed for satisfying short play sessions. Death still provides progression, ensuring every session contributes to character development.

From the Hell Let Loose developers, Hunger shows promise as a distinctive fusion of extraction mechanics and deep RPG systems. IGN will continue coverage as development progresses.
