Marathon Release Date Confirmed During Gameplay Reveal Showcase

Bungie, the renowned developer behind Destiny and Halo, has officially unveiled the release date for their highly anticipated game, Marathon, during an engaging gameplay reveal showcase. Dive into the details of what to expect from the game and how you can participate in the upcoming Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest.

Marathon Set to Launch on September 23, 2025

Returning to Tau Ceti

On April 13, Bungie hosted a captivating gameplay reveal showcase for their upcoming first-person extraction shooter, Marathon. Set in the Tau Ceti system, the game shifts the focus to intense multiplayer dynamics, where six teams of three players will battle against each other and AI-controlled adversaries to secure valuable loot and successfully extract items.

This new direction marks a significant departure from the original Marathon trilogy. The first game was released in 1994, followed by Marathon 2: Durandal in 1995, and Marathon Infinity in 1996. Unlike the multiplayer-centric new Marathon, these games were renowned for their immersive, story-driven single-player experiences.

In a detailed PlayStation.blog post dated April 12, Bungie developers shared insights into the game's evolution. Despite the shift towards multiplayer, Marathon Narrative Leader Jonathan Goff emphasized that the game would retain the experiential storytelling that has become synonymous with Bungie's titles.

Goff elaborated, "The interweaving of narratives, events, and characters in the original trilogy delivered a world of discovery, wonder, and misdirection." He further explained, "Our goal with Marathon is not simply to tell a story, but to create immersive worlds where stories naturally unfold."

Crafting Marathon as a "Story Engine"

During the reveal stream, viewers noted the game's strong emphasis on in-game economics, with every item in a player's inventory having a sell price and clear indicators of what can be extracted from each map. However, Bungie clarified that accumulating wealth is just one aspect of the game.

The developers aim for Marathon to function as a "story engine," fostering memorable battles and enduring experiences, even when players fail missions or leave maps empty-handed. In an interview with PC Gamer, Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler discussed this vision.

Ziegler noted, "Our objective is to create adventures where players feel the thrill of survival challenges and craft their own survival stories. Some of the most compelling survival stories in gaming arise from failures or unexpected events." He stressed that success in Marathon is not solely about survival but about creating a compelling narrative from each gameplay session.

Collaborating with Fans and Creators

Throughout Marathon's development, Bungie has actively engaged with fans and content creators. From the project's inception, players have been involved in testing early prototypes and providing critical feedback.

A key piece of feedback was the feeling that maps were unfair and unpredictable, with concerns about spawn camping and contested loot. Responding to this, Ziegler explained, "We adjusted our design to ensure each match starts fresh for everyone. This approach allows teams to strategize effectively before each run and compete fairly for desired loot."

Bungie is set to kick off the Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest from April 23 to May 4, exclusively for residents in the U.S. and Canada. The alpha will introduce players to four distinct Runners: Blackbird (similar to Destiny 2’s Warlock), Void (with tactical invisibility), Locus (equipped with a tactical shield), and Glitch (known for its high mobility). Players will explore three different maps, including Perimeter (a woodland setting for 15 players) and Dire Marsh (an open map for 18 players).
