The disappointing reception of the TV adaptation of *Halo* hasn't deterred Microsoft from venturing further into video game adaptations. This was confirmed by Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, who hinted at more projects on the horizon during an interview with Variety before the launch of *A Minecraft Movie*, a big-screen adaptation starring Jack Black based on the popular Microsoft-owned sandbox game, Minecraft. The success of this film could pave the way for sequels, further solidifying Microsoft's commitment to bringing its video game IPs to new audiences.
Microsoft's journey into adaptations includes the highly successful *Fallout* series on Prime Video, with a second season already in the works. However, the *Halo* TV series, despite its significant budget, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception. Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from these experiences, stating, "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more." He added, "We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously, we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’"
With this momentum, speculation is rife about which Xbox game might be adapted next. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for a live-action film and an animated series based on *Gears of War*, although updates have been scarce since then, except for occasional comments from MCU star Dave Bautista about his interest in playing Marcus Fenix.

Given the success of *Fallout*, could Prime Video be interested in an *Elder Scrolls/Skyrim* TV show? However, with *The Rings of Power* and *The Wheel of Time*, Amazon might feel it has the fantasy genre well-covered. Sony's successful *Gran Turismo* movie suggests that a *Forza Horizon* film could be on Microsoft's radar.
Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard opens up possibilities for adaptations like *Call of Duty* or another attempt at a *Warcraft* movie. Jason Schreier's book, *Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment*, revealed that Activision Blizzard had been developing series for *Warcraft*, *Overwatch*, and *Diablo* with Netflix, which were later abandoned. Could Microsoft revive these projects?
On a lighter note, Microsoft now owns *Crash Bandicoot*, which could be ripe for an animated movie or TV series, especially following the success of *Mario* and *Sonic* films. The upcoming reboot of *Fable* in 2026 might also be a candidate for adaptation. And, could Microsoft give *Halo* another chance with a big-budget movie?
Microsoft's console rivals, Sony and Nintendo, are further along in this process. Sony has seen success with the *Uncharted* movie, HBO's *The Last of Us*, and *Twisted Metal*, which is set for a second season. Sony has also announced adaptations for *Helldivers 2*, *Horizon Zero Dawn*, and an anime version of *Ghost of Tsushima*, with the *God of War* TV show already planned for two seasons.
Nintendo boasts the most successful video game adaptation to date with *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, and a sequel is in development alongside a live-action *The Legend of Zelda* adaptation.
