Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The team behind A Minecraft Movie shared with IGN that one of the film's most comedic scenes drew inspiration from The NeverEnding Story. In a memorable moment, Jack Black's character Steve finds himself in a precarious situation, needing to fly on Jason Momoa's Garrett due to limited Elytra wings, which were only available for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's Henry. The scene showcases Steve's comedic struggle to stay aloft, clinging to Garrett in a bid to avoid a perilous fall.

Play"We definitely wanted to capture a Falkor moment from The Neverending Story that was both majestic and beautiful, but also one that quickly goes awry," explained A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious during the breaks between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on Jason, and they were in this intricate rig... and Jack started singing the theme from The NeverEnding Story, treating Jason like he was riding Falkor."

The scene is a humorous nod to Jack Black's role as Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3, and it was a significant moment for Jason Momoa, who played a key role in its development.

"I helped write that scene, and Jack was all in," Momoa shared with a chuckle. "After Top Gun: Maverick, I wanted to incorporate a similar stunt where I could hit the brakes and let Jack slide off, then switch places. We were brainstorming in the hotel, laughing about this stunt, and it ended up in the movie—it's phenomenal."

"There were different versions of that scene, and I'm not sure which one made the final cut," Jack Black mentioned. "It could have been rated R, but we kept it family-friendly in the end!"

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa said. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
