On January 19, TikTok temporarily halted its operations in the US, which unexpectedly affected Marvel Snap, the popular card game developed by Second Dinner Studios and published by Nuverse, a ByteDance subsidiary. The game was offline for 24 hours but is now back online, though full access has not been restored yet, and in-game purchases remain unavailable. To prevent future disruptions, the developers are considering changing publishers and moving some services to internal resources, as announced in an official statement on Platform X.
The decision stems from political risks, with TikTok receiving only a 90-day extension to sell 50% of its business to a local owner. If this deal fails, TikTok and its related projects, including Marvel Snap, risk being blocked again. Second Dinner Studios has promised to provide more updates soon.
Despite many players experiencing authorization issues, the game remained visible on Steam for PC users. Second Dinner's developers expressed their surprise at the incident and are actively working to fully restore the game. According to an official statement on Platform X, "Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress."
One of the most frustrating aspects for players was the lack of prior warning. Many continued to spend money on in-game purchases, unaware of the potential for a lockout.
