Lies of P Director Clarifies Difficulty Shift: Aiming for Broader Player Base

by Hunter May 23,2025

Lies of P's highly anticipated DLC, Overture, marks a significant shift by introducing difficulty options for the first time in the game's history. As a "Soulslike" title, Lies of P is known for its challenging gameplay, which can be daunting for newcomers drawn to its intriguing dark narrative and atmospheric setting. Initially, the game's director, Jiwon Choi, maintained that Soulslike games should not feature difficulty settings, a stance reflected in the original release. However, following extensive feedback from the player community and internal discussions, Neowiz has reconsidered its approach.

“We wanted to ensure that a broader audience could enjoy the game,” Choi explained to VGC. "By incorporating feedback from our customers and developers, we've made adjustments to include these difficulty options, thus catering to different types of players and expanding our game's reach."

The announcement has sparked a lively debate among players about the director's change of heart. One player commented, "It's easier to stick to your guns about difficulty than to face constant criticism and negative reviews, which ultimately push you to make the game more accessible to a wider audience." Another shared their personal experience, stating, "I started gaming later in life, and I'm using the easier settings because I struggle with the game's difficulty. It's great to hear why someone might need these options. I didn't grow up with gaming systems, so I appreciate being able to enjoy games now as an adult."

However, not all feedback has been positive. Some players expressed disappointment on Steam forums and social media, with one saying, "I was interested in playing, but with the nerfs and added difficulty levels, I've lost interest. Developers, please stop catering to less experienced players." Another lamented, "You had a masterpiece, Neowiz, and now it's a laughing stock. For shame." Yet, many others supported the change, arguing against the exclusivity often demanded by some in the gaming community. One player noted, "Souls elitists want to keep the game hard to brag about their achievements. I'm glad Lies of P isn't catering to them."

Lies of P offers a dark reinterpretation of the Pinocchio tale, combining challenging action with a unique "lie" system that dynamically influences gameplay. The Overture DLC brings new locations, enemies, bosses, characters, and weapons to the game. It also introduces a new mode called Death March, allowing players to confront the game's bosses repeatedly. The DLC is expected to take seasoned players approximately 15-20 hours to complete and will become available after reaching a specific chapter. Neowiz has also announced plans for a full sequel to Lies of P.

In our review, we awarded Lies of P an 8/10, noting, "Lies of P might not stray far from its Soulslike roots, but it executes its genre with excellence."
