Firaxis reveals a virtual reality edition of the newly launched Civilization 7.

Sid Meier's Civilization 7 VR marks the strategy series’ debut in virtual reality, set for release in spring 2025 exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S.

Official description:

In Civilization 7 VR, the Civilization universe comes alive in unprecedented ways. A Command Table displays the map, allowing players to view from above or zoom in to admire intricate details of structures and units, evoking a living tabletop game. Players will guide their civilization and interact directly with legendary world leaders at the Command Table, forging alliances or waging war through the ages.
Civilization 7 VR supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality, with seamless switching between modes. In virtual reality, players enter an elegant museum overlooking a landscape tailored to their leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table integrates with the player’s real-world environment. The Archives, a museum room, showcases detailed dioramas of gameplay milestones in both VR and mixed reality. Beyond single-player, Civilization 7 VR offers online multiplayer, allowing up to four Meta Quest 3 and 3S players to compete for global dominance.

Firaxis’ 4X strategy sequel is available on PC and consoles for those with premium early access, though Steam user reviews have voiced concerns over the user interface, limited map diversity, and missing features expected from the series.

Firaxis has addressed this feedback, committing to UI enhancements, cooperative multiplayer team modes, and expanded map variety, among other updates.

In an IGN interview before third-quarter financial results, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged mixed reviews from critics and players but expressed optimism, stating the “core Civ audience” will warm to the game over time and describing its early performance as “highly promising.”
