by Eric May 15,2025

Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling the exciting details of their upcoming Magic: The Gathering collaboration with Final Fantasy, set to launch this summer. Over the weekend, they showcased a substantial array of cards from both the main set and the Commander decks, sparking enthusiasm among fans who are thrilled to see familiar characters and moments from their beloved Final Fantasy games brought to life in Magic.

The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy is set to be expansive, featuring both a standard Commander format and a booster-driven series. The main set spans the entire history of Final Fantasy's mainline games, from Final Fantasy 1 through to Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks zero in on four iconic titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, with Commanders Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola leading the charge.

1$709.99 at Walmart$455.88 at AmazonDuring the Magic: The Gathering panel at PAX East last Saturday, a selection of cards was revealed, highlighting the journey of key characters throughout their games. For instance, Final Fantasy IV's Cecil features a unique mechanic that represents his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. The summons in Final Fantasy are brought to life through a "Saga Creature" setup, blending the essence of both Magic and Final Fantasy into powerful, yet temporary, game forces.

Cards like Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, illustrated by Square's Tetsuya Nomura, showcase Sephiroth's evolution through various forms in the FF7 universe, culminating in his iconic Safer Sephiroth form on the Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel card.

The reception has been overwhelmingly positive.

Reprints and new versions of existing Magic cards cleverly intertwine with Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp's artwork draws inspiration from the Jenova project in Final Fantasy 7.

Many cards across the decks reference significant character moments, so be aware of potential spoilers.

On a lighter note, Final Fantasy 10's memorable and often-memed moment is captured with Inspiring Call.

Clever Concealment, for instance, riffs on the Wall Market scene from Final Fantasy 7, complete with Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses, heading to Don Corneo's. The Secret Rendezvous card features four different versions of the Golden Saucer date scene from Final Fantasy 7, each with a potential date: Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

The Final Fantasy 14 set, in particular, is rich with references to the beloved MMORPG. The Hildibrand Manderville card captures the gentleman's penchant for disappearing and reappearing, creating an intriguing White/Black card. One user on the FFXIV subreddit pointed out that the Archaeomancer's Map card uses a location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.

Final Fantasy 14 players have been enjoying the cards, with some playful banter about the Thancred card and the "This is Thancred" meme. Another user added alternative flavor text to the Rite of Replication card, commemorating a famous speech from A Realm Reborn.

Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

While the Commander decks have received much attention, reveals like Commune With Beavers from Saturday's panel have me eager to see how other Final Fantasy games are adapted into the broader Magic set.

The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set will be available on June 13, 2025, with pre-release events starting one week earlier.
