Sarah Michelle Gellar envisions the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot featuring the original cast, including characters who died.
In a Vanity Fair interview, Gellar shared her vision for a series blending fresh and familiar faces, with a lighter tone compared to the darker Season 6 and Season 7 of the original.
As an executive producer, Gellar will star in the reboot’s pilot and take a recurring role, passing the Slayer role to Ryan Kiera Armstrong. She hinted that other classic cast members will likely return for the reboot.
"The reboot will have a lighter feel than the original’s later seasons," Gellar explained. "We aim to balance new and returning characters, and I’d love to see everyone who died come back, while still making room for new stories."
Gellar’s comments mark the first mention of plans to revive other classic characters, including deceased ones, opening exciting possibilities for the series.
Character deaths were rare in Buffy’s original run, though later seasons saw the tragic loss of fan-favorite witch Tara and former demon Anya in the finale.
The Best Buffy the Vampire Slayer Episodes

The Buffy spin-off Angel saw several character deaths, including some from the original series. Cordelia, the cheerleader-turned-seer, died in later episodes, while Wesley, a Watcher-turned-demon-hunter, fell in the finale.
In Buffy’s world, death doesn’t prevent characters from returning, with many actors reprising or starting roles as undead or resurrected figures. Buffy herself died multiple times, and several close allies were vampires.
Gellar recently reunited with Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow, in a video dispelling feud rumors. Fans hope this signals Hannigan’s potential return, though no confirmation has been made.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran from 1997 to 2003, starring Gellar, Hannigan, Nicholas Brendan as Xander, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia, David Boreanaz as Angel, and Anthony Stewart Head as Giles. Joss Whedon, the original creator, is not involved in the reboot.
