Following the Game Awards 2022 reveal of a new Ōkami title, fan speculation immediately centered on Capcom's RE Engine powering the sequel, given Capcom's role as publisher. IGN can exclusively confirm this is indeed the case, based on interviews with key project leads.
In an extensive interview, Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata confirmed the use of RE Engine. Regarding Machine Head Works' involvement, Sakata explained their role as a bridge between Capcom (IP holder and director of the game's overall vision) and Clover (the lead developer). Machine Head Works' prior experience working with both Capcom and Hideki Kamiya, along with their familiarity with RE Engine, proved invaluable. Crucially, their team includes members who worked on the original Ōkami.
When asked about the appeal of RE Engine and its suitability for an Ōkami sequel, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi simply stated, "Yes," elaborating that Capcom believes Kamiya's artistic vision wouldn't be achievable without it. Kamiya himself added that RE Engine's renowned expressive capabilities are expected by fans.
Sakata further hinted that RE Engine might allow the team to realize aspects of the original Ōkami's vision that were previously technically impossible. He suggested that modern technology, combined with RE Engine, would enable them to surpass their initial ambitions.
RE Engine, Capcom's proprietary game engine (initially developed for Resident Evil 7), has powered many of their major titles, including various Resident Evil entries, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and Dragon's Dogma. While most RE Engine games feature a realistic art style, the prospect of its application to Ōkami's distinctive aesthetic is intriguing. Capcom's development of a successor engine, REX, and its gradual integration into RE Engine, suggests the Ōkami sequel may incorporate some of REX's advancements.
