Tute Cabrero is a widely enjoyed card game across South America, known for its strategic depth and competitive play. Designed for 3 to 5 players, the game is played individually with no teams—everyone competes against each other.
The primary goal in Tute Cabrero is to either accumulate the most points or the fewest points, depending on the variation being played (commonly referred to as “ir a más” or “ir a menos”). In this setup, the second-place finisher actually loses, adding an extra layer of tension to every move.
The game uses a standard 40-card Spanish deck, and the card ranking from highest to lowest is as follows: Ace (worth 11 points), followed by the 3 (10 points), King (4 points), Knight (3 points), Jack (2 points), and then the 7, 6, 5, 4, and 2—all of which carry no point value.
During gameplay, the first card played in a trick sets the lead suit. All players must follow that suit if possible; otherwise, they may play any card. The trump suit always takes the trick. If no trump cards are played, the highest card of the leading suit wins the round.
