Chess is played on an 8x8 square board. The 64 squares alternate between light and dark. The board is positioned so each player has a light square on their right-hand side.
Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen, and 1 King. The player with the white pieces moves first. Players then take turns moving one piece per turn.
