In television, beloved shows rarely stay gone forever — and in a year filled with revivals like The Office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the cherished 2000s hospital comedy Scrubs is making a comeback.
It’s been 24 years since Zach Braff first portrayed the young doctor JD at Sacred Heart Hospital. Now, Braff is set to return as JD in ABC’s upcoming Scrubs reboot, blending fresh faces with familiar ones.
This concept echoes ABC’s earlier attempt with Scrubs’ ninth season, which introduced a younger cast alongside Braff and other originals. That effort struggled, ending after just nine episodes.

Nearly two decades later, ABC is giving it another shot. Bill Lawrence, the show’s original creator, is driving this reboot/revival hybrid.
With Braff officially on board, Entertainment Weekly suggests other original cast members may soon follow.
“We’ve discussed it a lot, and I think the key is combining two things,” Lawrence previously shared with Deadline.
“First, fans want to see what the medical world looks like for characters they care about, which is crucial for any successful reboot. Second, the show always thrived by showing young, idealistic people entering medicine, driven by a true calling.”
Scrubs ran for 182 episodes from 2001 to 2010. No details yet on when production for new episodes will start.
