Virtua Fighter Rises Again: Sega Showcases Stunning In-Game Footage

Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse into the Future

Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of relative dormancy. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, this new installment promises a fresh take on the classic fighting game.

The recently released footage, shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, isn't actual gameplay, but rather a meticulously choreographed cinematic showcasing the game's visuals. While undeniably staged, the video provides a strong indication of the game's aesthetic direction. It suggests a departure from the franchise's signature polygonal style, moving towards a more realistic visual presentation that blends elements reminiscent of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new outfits that deviate from his traditional look.

The last significant Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown (2021), a remaster slated for a Steam release in January 2025. This upcoming title, however, represents a completely new entry in the series. While details remain scarce, Sega's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter brand is evident through these ongoing reveals. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared during the VF Direct 2024 livestream, "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The game's development is also being handled concurrently with Sega's ambitious Project Century, further highlighting the company's investment in the franchise's future. The return of Virtua Fighter could solidify the 2020s as a golden age for fighting games, following recent releases from other major franchises.
