New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The eagerly awaited Switch 2 is set to revolutionize gaming with enhanced joy-con capabilities, including what seems to be mouse support. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent filed by Nintendo on February 6, 2025, detailing the innovative features of the Switch 2's joy-con.

The patent highlights the joy-con's mouse-like functionality, which was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer. The trailer showcased the controller being dragged across a surface, suggesting its potential use as a mouse. This patent filing confirms the speculations surrounding the new joy-con, despite Nintendo's usual secrecy about the Switch 2's details.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Switch 2's joy-con retains the familiar detachable design of the original Nintendo Switch, but introduces a novel mouse feature. According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

In addition to the mouse functionality, the joy-cons can be charged using a new dock capable of charging two joy-cons simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment connects the joy-con to the console and includes a wrist strap, reminiscent of the original joy-con design.

The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers that resemble a standard controller split in half, each equipped with an optical sensor on the side for mouse-like operation. These controllers can be combined using a separate attachment to form a traditional controller.

It's important to note that the features described in the patent might not all be included in the final Switch 2 product, as Nintendo has not yet officially confirmed these functionalities.
