The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a patent filed by Nintendo on February 6, 2025, detailing the innovative features of the Switch 2's joy-con.
The patent highlights the joy-con's mouse-like functionality, which was hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer. The trailer showcased the controller being dragged across a surface, suggesting its potential use as a mouse. Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers
The Switch 2's joy-con retains the familiar detachable design of the original Nintendo Switch, but introduces a novel mouse feature. According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."
