Sony Removes PS3 Classics Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from PS5 and PS4 in Major PS Plus Overhaul

Next month, a total of 22 games will be removed from the PlayStation Plus library, including high-profile titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This significant update to the service will affect subscribers who enjoy a wide range of gaming experiences.

PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service for PlayStation platforms. It offers a variety of benefits to its members, including free monthly games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer access, and exclusive member discounts. For Extra and Premium members, the service also provides access to a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games, enhancing their gaming library significantly.

As reported by Push Square, the impending removal of 22 games on May 20 marks a notable change for the service, especially with the departure of two prominent first-party Sony PS3 games from the PS Plus Premium library.

The removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 is particularly noteworthy because these games are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store. This makes the PS Plus Premium streaming service the final platform where players can experience these titles, unless they own the games and a functional PS3. Both games were added to the library towards the end of 2024, and their removal comes less than a year later.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac, consists of alternate history first-person shooters. Following the success of the Ratchet and Clank series, Insomniac released three Resistance games for the PS3 before shifting focus to other projects, including Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles.

While it's rare for Sony to remove first-party games from PS Plus, there have been precedents, such as the unexpected removal of both Horizon gamesHorizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West — in August 2024. However, unlike the Horizon titles, which remained available for purchase, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will become completely inaccessible on modern consoles after their removal.

Interestingly, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the PS4 game InFamous: Second Son is also set to leave PS Plus.

The Resistance series has been inactive for some time. In February, Insomniac's founder and outgoing president, Ted Price, disclosed efforts to develop Resistance 4, but the project did not receive approval. Similar to Guerrilla's Killzone series, Resistance has been sidelined in recent years.
