Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio

Sony's Unveiling of a New AAA Game Studio in Los Angeles

A recently posted job listing confirms Sony's establishment of a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio and adds to their impressive lineup of renowned developers. The studio is currently unannounced and is developing a high-profile, original AAA IP exclusively for the PS5.

The secrecy surrounding this new studio has naturally generated significant excitement among PlayStation fans. Given the success of studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games, anticipation is high for this latest addition. Sony's strategic acquisitions of studios like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite in recent years further fueled this excitement.

Potential Origins of the New Studio

Speculation points to two potential sources for this new team. The first is a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the July 2024 layoffs where 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team was reportedly working on an incubation project codenamed "Gummybears."

Another strong contender is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. Following Deviation's closure, many former employees joined PlayStation, suggesting Blundell's team may be the core of this new studio. Given the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, this seems a more likely scenario.

The Future of Sony's Newest Studio

While details remain scarce, the possibility that Blundell's team might be continuing or reviving Deviation Games' previous project is intriguing. Regardless of the specific project, the confirmation of another first-party PlayStation game in development is welcome news for fans. It's likely to be several years before Sony officially reveals any information about the studio's project, but the anticipation is already building.
