Sony provides an update on the temporary availability of classic PlayStation console themes for PS5, along with news regarding future theme releases.
In a recent tweet, Sony announced the discontinuation of the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 themed PS5 console designs on January 31st, 2025. However, they confirmed plans to reinstate these popular themes in the coming months, bringing back the nostalgic boot-up sounds and visuals. Sony expressed gratitude for the positive reception of these themes.

Despite this positive news, Sony also revealed that there are currently no plans to develop additional console themes for the PS5. Their statement emphasized a continued celebration of PlayStation's legacy through other means.
"While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”
This announcement has drawn considerable disappointment from fans. The PS5's lack of themes, a feature present in previous PlayStation consoles, remains a point of contention, and this statement suggests it won't be addressed during this console generation.
These temporary themes, released in honor of PlayStation's 30th anniversary (December 3rd, 2024), allowed PS5 users to customize their home screen and menus with iconic elements from the PSOne (classic console background), PS2 (menu shapes), PS3 (wave background), and PS4 (similar wave patterns). Each theme incorporated the respective console's characteristic sound effects.
