Skul: The Hero Slayer is the latest Epic Games freebie and the first release of 2026. It delivers fast-paced roguelike action where you play as Skul, a minion turned avenger. Face off against the Imperial Army, Adventurers, and self-proclaimed heroes.
The more things change, the more they stay the same, right? We are already into 2026, and we have our first Epic Games Store freebie to review: this week's pick is Skul: The Hero Slayer. This means you are in for an anti-heroic journey as you step into the shoes of a minion seeking vengeance.
As Skul, you serve among many lowly minions under the Demon King. When his stronghold falls and your allies are captured, it becomes your mission to defeat the unruly Adventurers, the Imperial Army, and the so-called Hero of Caerleon.
Of course, that is just the narrative backbone. In terms of gameplay, Skul provides the same high-speed roguelike action you would expect from titles like Dead Cells. It also incorporates fast-paced horde-slaying mechanics similar to Vampire Survivors, all wrapped in beautiful pixel art graphics.

Dead and buried
Skul is definitely one I will be grabbing (hopefully it works better with my controller than Dead Cells did), not just because I plan to play it immediately, but simply because you would be foolish not to claim these deals while they are available on PC.
What about the quality of Skul itself? It features fast-paced action gameplay, ample roguelike progression to dive into, and even an official collaboration with Dead Cells. Whether you value deep content or solid mechanics, I do not think you will end up disappointed.
In the meantime, if you are looking for something else to play this week, it is time for our debut edition of the five best new mobile games to try out as Catherine explores 2026's latest launches!
