"Red Dead Redemption 2 Rumored for Nintendo Switch 2 by 2025 End with Next-Gen Patch"

by Leo May 18,2025

Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 might hit the shelves by the end of 2025. Additionally, there's buzz about a next-gen upgrade coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, insiders "close to Rockstar" suggest that this Wild West epic is being tailored for the Switch 2, alongside a "next-gen upgrade patch" designed to enhance the experience on current-gen consoles.

While specifics remain under wraps, GameReactor's sources hint that both the port and the upgrade could be available as soon as later this year. This news aligns with similar reports from Nintenduo, which also mentions a potential Switch 2 release within Take-Two's current fiscal year, ending on March 31, 2026. It's still unclear whether this version will be exclusively digital or if there will be a physical edition available.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, it was hailed as a "masterpiece" by IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review, earning a perfect 10/10 score. The review praised the game as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."

The possibility of Red Dead Redemption 2 making its way to the Switch 2 isn't entirely unexpected. In a recent Q&A session with investors following Take-Two's latest financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform. He highlighted Nintendo's improved support for third-party publishers compared to previous generations, stating, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform."

Zelnick elaborated on their strategy, noting, "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

Take-Two has confirmed four titles for the Switch 2 launch: Civilization 7 (launching on June 5), the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (specific titles and release dates yet to be announced), and Borderlands 4 (set for September 12). These titles are not surprising, given Take-Two's history with these franchises on the original Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door might be open for additional releases, particularly from their back catalog. While GTA 6 might not be on the cards, classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 could potentially make the jump to the new console.
