James Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran are steering this new cinematic universe away from the less favorably received DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which included films like Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Man of Steel. However, some elements from the DCEU will carry over into the new DCU, with Peacemaker serving as a prime example. While Season 1 was part of the DCEU, Season 2 transitions into the new DCU.
James Gunn has emphasized that "many strands will remain consistent as far as Peacemaker's story goes," although it's not yet clear which specific elements will transition. He has confirmed that all of Team Peacemaker will return with the same actors, including John Cena as Peacemaker, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo.
Furthermore, Gunn has stated that Peacemaker Season 2 will be set after the events of both Creature Commandos and Superman, with the latter's events directly influencing the storyline of Peacemaker.
