Nexus Mods is implementing age verification measures for users in Europe and the UK to comply with new regulations.
Last month, Nexus Mods founder Robin "Dark0ne" Scott announced his decision to step back from daily operations, stating this move benefited both himself and the community.
These upcoming changes stem from legal requirements under the UK's Online Safety Act and EU's Digital Services Act, rather than directives from new ownership.
"As a UK-based company, we're legally required to remove illegal content and implement safeguards restricting children's access to adult material," the company clarified.
"We face a choice: either eliminate adult content entirely for European users or adapt our policies with age verification controls.
"Adult content represents an essential component of our platform's identity. Rather than remove it, we're implementing verification measures, though we recognize some users may find these changes inconvenient."
The team will share additional details when finalizing its Adult Content Guidelines. Currently, they're updating Terms of Service to clearly define prohibited content under UK law and outline child protection measures.
"While we previously banned such content, we're strengthening our language to eliminate ambiguity," Nexus stated. "All users will receive notifications about these TOS updates."
The platform will implement automated systems to detect and remove illegal or abusive content instantly. Offending users will face bans and potential reports to the National Crime Agency.
Other upcoming improvements include revised adult content tagging, enhanced blocking/muting tools, and better spam detection. Age verification will eventually apply to most adult content for European users, while non-European visitors remain exempt.
"Our current age verification method for adult content will continue unless local laws mandate changes," developers noted.
In other modding news, Stellar Blade director Kim Hyung Tae has expressed full support for modding. This endorsement aligns well with the over 600 existing mods on Nexus, ranging from cosmetic changes to VR adaptations – plus numerous additional mods classified as adult content and hidden from public view.
