Suits has long been a beloved series among fans, maintaining its popularity for nearly 15 years since its debut on USA Network in 2011. The show experienced a notable revival in recent years thanks to its full availability on Netflix, sparking countless binge-watching marathons. However, despite this renewed interest, the spin-off Suits LA was recently canceled by NBC shortly after the release of the network’s fall lineup. What led to this decision? According to Jeff Bader, NBCUniversal’s president of program planning strategy, it came down to audience engagement and growth potential.
“It’s so hard to talk about shows and which ones you bring back, and Suits had a very short run, but it really just hasn’t resonated the way we thought it would,” Bader told Variety. “There can be many reasons why, people are speculating, but it’s just not showing the potential to grow for us in the future, unfortunately.”
Bader further explained that decisions like these rely heavily on both linear and digital performance metrics. “We had to look at the performance of the shows, both on linear and on digital. We had to see the ones that looked like they had growth potential in the future,” he said. “We’re looking at how stable they are on their linear performance, how stable they are on digital, which ones are growing and which ones are declining. And we had to make some hard decisions.”
Although NBCUniversal often explores the possibility of transferring canceled shows to Peacock, [ttpp] revealed that Suits LA did not receive approval for such a move. The lack of traction across platforms sealed its fate.
On the flip side, Bader also outlined what qualities helped other shows remain on the schedule, particularly as NBC needed to free up space for NBA coverage taking over Tuesday nights. “We looked at what their performance was week-to-week, episode-to-episode, on both linear and digital, to try and determine which ones had the best ratings story,” he added. “And then creatively, the teams evaluated which shows had the most potential to attract new audiences. Those were the two that rose to the top.”
