"Back to the Future Writer Firmly Rejects Any Prequels or Spinoffs"

by Logan May 25,2025

There will "never" be another Back to the Future project, insists Bob Gale, one of the screenwriters behind the iconic trilogy. Despite ongoing speculation and discussions about potential TV series or new movies, Gale remains firm in his stance.

Rumors intensified after the co-creators of the successful Cobra Kai series, a revival of the Karate Kid franchise, hinted at a possible Back to the Future TV show. However, Gale expressed frustration over these persistent rumors, stating to People, "I don't know why they keep talking about that! I mean, do they think that if they say it enough times, we're going to actually do it?"

Gale categorically dismissed any possibility of a Back to the Future 4, a prequel, or any spinoff, emphasizing, "It's just fine the way it is. It's not perfect, but as Bob Zemeckis used to say, 'It's perfect enough.'"

Yet, executive producer Steven Spielberg's approval would be necessary, and according to Gale, Spielberg respects the decision to leave the franchise untouched.

Gale humorously remarked on the pressure from corporate entities, saying, "If the juggernaut of corporate America or corporate international mishigas says, 'If you don't agree to this, we're going to kill your children,' alright, well, no, we don't want our children killed." He also praised Spielberg's support, stating, "Steven, just like Steven won't allow another E.T., he totally respects the fact that we don't want any more Back to the Future. He gets it and always stood behind that. And thank you, Steven."

Gale's sentiments align with his previous statements. In February, he delivered a blunt message to fans hoping for a Back to the Future 4: "People always say, 'When are you going to do Back to the Future 4?' And we say, 'F**k you.'"
