"Elden Ring Nightreign Director Admits Duos Were Neglected, Focus Was on 3 Players"

Elden Ring Nightreign is set to immerse players in the dynamic and ever-changing landscapes of Limveld, where survival hinges on exploration and combat, whether you're playing solo or teaming up in groups of three. However, for those who prefer to play in pairs, it seems an adjustment will be necessary as the game currently does not support a duo mode without a third player joining in.

In an insightful interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign's director, Junya Ishizaki, shed light on the game's design choices. Ishizaki admitted that the option for a two-player mode without a third was "overlooked during development." He elaborated, "The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that. As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it's at the core of Nightreign."

Despite this oversight, Ishizaki emphasized the game's commitment to solo play as well. "Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start," he said. "And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed. So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well."

For those committed to duo play, it might be worth opening up to the possibility of a third player joining your sessions. You never know, you might just end up with a skilled ally by your side.

Solo players can rest assured that Elden Ring Nightreign has been designed with them in mind. Ishizaki noted that the game's parameters "adjust dynamically depending on the number of players in that session," ensuring that lone wolves won't feel overwhelmed. Additionally, solo players will find self-revive options scattered throughout the game, tailored specifically for those braving Limveld alone.

For those who embrace the trio format, Elden Ring Nightreign has been meticulously crafted to provide the optimal experience. Whether or not duo support is added post-launch, having an extra player can only help when facing the formidable bosses lurking in Nightreign.

Mark your calendars: Elden Ring Nightreign is scheduled for release on May 30, 2025, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X and S.
