"Dune: Awakening MMO Launches Without Monthly Fees"

by Nora May 07,2025

Excitement is building for fans of the iconic Dune universe as Dune: Awakening gears up for its full release on May 20. The developers at Funcom have made it clear that this highly anticipated multiplayer survival game, inspired by Frank Herbert's 1965 epic sci-fi novel, will launch without the need for a monthly subscription, setting it apart from other MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV, World of Warcraft, and EVE Online. Instead, the game will be supported through free updates, ensuring a continuous stream of new content, features, and enhancements for players to enjoy.

Funcom's commitment to long-term support is backed by their successful track record with live service games. Their portfolio includes the enduring Anarchy Online, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year, and Conan Exiles, which continues to thrive with regular free updates, DLCs, and expansions well beyond its initial release.

No Early Access and No Monthly Subscription

In a recent Steam blog post dated March 21, Funcom confirmed that Dune: Awakening will not have an early access period. This decision underscores their confidence in delivering a polished game right from the start. The post also detailed the game's business model, system requirements, and plans for post-launch support.

Pre-Orders Live Now and Game Editions Revealed

Following the announcement, pre-orders for Dune: Awakening went live on March 24. Players can choose from three editions: Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate. Pre-ordering any edition grants access to two exclusive in-game items: the Terrarium of Muad'Dib, a detailed in-base decoration, and the Sunset Dye Global Swatch, a unique color pattern applicable to weapons, vehicles, and armor.

Opting for the Deluxe or Ultimate edition offers an additional perk—a 5-day head start, allowing players to dive into the game on May 15. The Deluxe edition includes the base game, the menacing Sardaukar Bator Armor, and a Season Pass with four DLCs. The first DLC will feature placeables inspired by Arrakis' wildlife, including the iconic Shai-Hulud, with the subsequent three DLCs to be released later.

The Ultimate edition builds on the Deluxe package with even more exclusive content. Players will receive unique color patterns for their sandbike and ornithopter, the Caladan Palace Building Set inspired by the 2021 film, the Dune 2021 Film Stillsuit worn by Paul Atreides, a 50-page digital artbook showcasing the game's development, and a 90-minute digital soundtrack.
