Nintendo unveiled comprehensive details about the Switch 2 in its April Direct, leaving fans eagerly awaiting U.S. preorders. While the console's price was predictable, the launch pricing of first-party Switch 2 games caught many off guard—especially Mario Kart World's $80 price tag. Additionally, the new Switch 2 accessories face notable price hikes compared to their predecessors, with costs rising further since the initial announcement.
My primary concern was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at $85. With multiple original Switch Pro controllers at home, I hoped to avoid upgrading. Fortunately, Nintendo confirmed in a developer interview that legacy Switch Pro controllers will remain compatible with the Switch 2.
Where to Find Switch Pro Controllers

Not the Switch 2 model. Available at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy
Though many may opt for the pricier Switch 2 Pro controller, most games won’t require it. Existing Switch Pro controller owners can save $80 by sticking with their current gear. For newcomers, the standard Pro controller remains a budget-friendly alternative at $69.99.
Original controllers may sell out ahead of the Switch 2 launch as retailers clear inventory. Amazon already faces significant shortages, leaving only third-party options. Alongside Pro controller compatibility, Nintendo confirmed original Joy-Cons will also work—though we generally recommend Pro controllers for better gameplay.
Switch 2 Pro Controller Release Date

The new Switch 2 Pro controller arrives exclusively with the console on June 5. Preorders for the system (and likely accessories) begin April 24. Note: The upgraded controller won’t function with original Switch models.
Walmart and Best Buy have listed the Switch 2 Pro controller, though preorder dates remain unspecified. Walmart’s listings also hint at upcoming game preorders.
