Avowed Director Leaves Obsidian for Netflix's Oxenfree Studio After 13 Years

Avowed director Carrie Patel has left Obsidian Entertainment, the renowned RPG developer, shortly after the release of their latest game. Patel, who had been with Obsidian for over 11 years, contributed significantly to major titles like The Outer Worlds and the Pillars of Eternity series. She took the helm of Avowed after its early development reboot, guiding it from a darker, Elder Scrolls-inspired setting to a brighter, unique experience with multiple explorable maps and a strictly single-player focus.

In a recent update on her LinkedIn profile, Patel announced her new role as Game Director at Night School, a studio owned by Netflix and known for the Oxenfree series. Her departure comes at a time when Night School released Thronglets, a Black Mirror spin-off, amidst layoffs and the closure of another Netflix studio working on a AAA project led by Halo veteran Joseph Staten.

Patel's influence on Avowed was well-received, with IGN's review praising the game's worldbuilding and character writing, though noting its adherence to familiar fantasy tropes. Despite initial plans for the franchise's expansion through sequels or additional content, Patel will not be part of Avowed's future developments. Obsidian recently outlined a six-month roadmap for Avowed, featuring minor updates like a Photo Mode and New Game Plus.

Meanwhile, Obsidian is gearing up for the reveal of The Outer Worlds 2 at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase in June.
