Hnefatafl is a historic Scandinavian board game, with variations enjoyed across medieval Europe long before chess emerged. In these Tafl games, two unequal armies clash. The invading black force aims to capture the white king, while the defending white army strives to protect its monarch and secure his escape.

Often known as the Viking Game, Hnefatafl recounts epic tales—from Muscovite invasions of Sweden to Viking raids on Britain. Yet, regardless of the story, one element remains constant: the thrilling hunt for the king.

Although the rules are simple, the gameplay delivers deep strategic depth and rewards tactical thinking. Trap enemy pieces, plan several moves ahead, set clever ambushes, and force your opponent to yield. Will you seize the king for gold and glory? Or can the royal guard withstand the onslaught and ensure their king’s flight to safety?
