Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, recently shared exciting news on social media about the game's ongoing success and future plans. Boon unveiled a sneak peek of the upcoming guest character, T-1000 Terminator, showcasing a thrilling Fatality that pays homage to the iconic chase scene from Terminator 2. Fans of the movie will undoubtedly appreciate the nod as T-1000 drives a smashed-up truck into his opponent, reminiscent of his pursuit of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Edward Furlong's John Connor.
To celebrate the release of another guest character, Conan the Barbarian, Boon announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold, an increase from the previously reported four million. Alongside this announcement, Boon teased the community about "future DLC," sparking speculation about additional content beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion.
The Khaos Reigns expansion concludes with T-1000, following the inclusion of characters like Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. This has led to discussions about whether NetherRealm will introduce a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3, especially given questions surrounding the game's sales performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, remains committed to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav stated that the company plans to focus on just four titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. This commitment is further supported by Boon's earlier statement in September, where he mentioned that NetherRealm had decided on its next game three years prior but promised continued support for Mortal Kombat 1.
While many fans anticipate a third installment in the Injustice series, neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this yet. The first Injustice game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, was released in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. NetherRealm then released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, and instead of alternating back to Injustice, they opted for another Mortal Kombat game, the soft reboot titled Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023.
In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon explained the decision to create another Mortal Kombat game, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine as key factors. He assured fans that the door is not closed on the Injustice franchise, leaving room for potential future developments in that series as well.
