Capcom Hints at Resident Evil 9 in Fun Video Marking 10M RE4 Players

Capcom has subtly teased Resident Evil 9 right under our noses.

To celebrate reaching an impressive 10 million players, the Resident Evil 4 development team released a short video on social media on April 25. The video features Ada Wong whispering to one of gaming's most iconic villains, followed by a scene where Leon is surrounded by an infected horde wearing party hats as they approach the church.

The video then shifts to a rock song, with Dr. Salvador amusingly strumming his chainsaw like a guitar. The camera pans to show a fist-pumping Leon, and behind him is a rustic sign reading "Thank you for playing."

However, if you tilt the sign sideways, the boards form the Roman numeral "IX," which signifies the number 9.

While it might seem like a coincidence, horror game leaker Dusk Golem points out that the lower plank on the sign was not present in earlier parts of the video, indicating it was intentionally added. This has sparked speculation among fans.

"I know what you did here," said one surprised responder, appending a wide-eyes emoji.

PlayCapcom has confirmed that the next mainline entry in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 9, will be directed by Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi.

"It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7]," Nakanishi said at the time. "But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial. I can't share any details just yet, but I hope you're excited for the day I can." It's speculated — though not confirmed — that the game will be set on an island inspired by Singapore.
