A strategic board game enjoyed throughout West Africa
Also known as Awele, Ayo, or Oware, Awale is part of the Mancala family and is designed for two players. It shares similarities with East African games like Omweso, Bao, and Igisoro.
Awale is played with 8 holes per player and a total of 64 seeds.
A player's territory consists of the row of holes positioned directly in front of them.
The objective is to capture all or most of your opponent's seeds to prevent them from making further moves.
Other popular games in the Mancala family include Ayo, Kisoro, and Omweso.
Historians suggest the Mancala family of games likely originated in Ethiopia during the era of the Aksum Kingdom.
