Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Standalone Status

by Caleb May 01,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the chances of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, stating that being a part of either team would signify the end of the character's journey. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds expressed, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that."

This statement comes after the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine, where Deadpool's obsession with joining the Avengers was a prominent theme. Speculation had been rife that Marvel Studios might be eager to integrate the 'Merc with a Mouth' into the Avengers lineup, particularly with the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday.

The cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday last month featured several veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, confirming a significant X-Men presence in the film. This has led to speculation about whether Avengers: Doomsday might secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie. However, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the confirmed list of stars for the film, despite Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, being included.

While Reynolds has ruled out a formal promotion to the Avengers or X-Men for Deadpool, he hinted at the possibility of a surprise cameo appearance in a supporting role. He referenced the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine as an example of what might work well for the character.

Looking ahead, Reynolds is currently working on a new project that he described as involving an "ensemble," though he kept details under wraps. He emphasized his preference for keeping Deadpool "isolated," suggesting that future projects might continue to feature a heavy reliance on cameos, similar to Deadpool & Wolverine. Potential cameo characters could include Snipes' Blade and Tatum's Gambit, alongside others like Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23.

As for Avengers: Doomsday, details remain sparse beyond the cast list. Anthony Mackie, set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, recently shared his belief that the film will recapture the classic Marvel feel that fans love. Other cast members, including Paul Rudd as Ant-Man and Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, have also spoken about the upcoming epic. An apparent set photo leak stirred excitement and concern among fans, with some interpreting it as a potential setback for the X-Men's role in the film.

Additionally, speculation has arisen about Oscar Isaac possibly appearing as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, fueled by his withdrawal from the Star Wars Celebration event due to changes in his production schedule. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has confirmed that the cast reveal was not exhaustive, stating, "We revealed many, not all," during a video call at CinemaCon.
